A Vegetarian’s Thanksgiving Prayer
Life is a turkey I shall not regret. I come to this table with Thanksgiving, not to receive a blessing but to give a blessing. The blessing that I give and receive is myself, a self that I can only know through my giving.
In this sacrifice of life, I am the turkey, the offering, and the one eating the turkey. When I give and receive myself, I am not divided and my legs and arms are not pulled off by a ravenous world. In the wholeness of my giving, I remain whole, and no matter how many take from me, life replenishes me. When something is taken from completeness, only completeness remains.
Life feeds life; so when I give this turkey to life, let life eat the whole turkey. I shall not hold back any thought, not a leg of regret, or a wing of doubt, or a giblet of fear. Let life clean me to the bone, leaving me empty. By giving all, I receive all.
Let us be thankful as we are giving; let the receiving and the giving be one; and in the completeness of this act of Thanksgiving, let the abundance of our table be replenished.
In God we are this completeness. Let us always be thankful.
Om, Amen, Shanti, Peace
